| Study Questions 2014 California Law A recent study by the Manhattan Institute published on Oct. 17 suggests Prop. 47, a law aimed to reduce California's prison population, is responsible for increased crime rates in the state. The law, passed in 2014, downgraded certain drug and theft crimes including forgery, grand theft, and larceny to misdemeanors.
The report points out that the number of cases dismissed with plea deals spiked by about 200 percent between 2014 and 2023 in Riverside county. Felony cases dropped about 30 percent while misdemeanors slightly increased.
"The shift is significant because it indicates that offenses were more reclassified than ameliorated," Hannah E. Meyers, author of the report, said. "Crime is not going down; it is being renamed." Read the full story here› | Dear reader,
